A View on Teacher's Role in School
A teacher is a force that drives the
educational system in a country. A teacher wears a variety of hats. There is a
lot more to teaching than just showing up and giving the day’s lesson. They are
the ones who interact with students and have to deal with the parents. It is
clear that the 21st-century classroom needs very different from the 20th-century ones. In the 21st-century classroom,
teachers are facilitators of students learning and creators of productive
classroom environments, in which students can develop skills they might need at
present or in future. Most teaches take on a variety of roles within the
classroom and here are four roles that a teacher often has to fill in order to
be the best educator they can be.
The first role that a teacher should foster is being a role model. Students look to
teachers as examples of professional adults. They often have more contact with
their teachers more than their own parents. So it is vital for teachers to
always reflect a positive image and teach children things like respect, trust,
and responsibility. A teacher can do this through his or her actions and words
in the classroom, leading by example.
Moreover,
being a participant inside a classroom lesson will improve the atmosphere in
the class when the teacher takes part in an activity. However, the teacher
takes a risk of dominating the activity when performing it. To prevent this
from occurring, the teacher should stand back and not become the centre of
attention. This way, it can enliven the class and the teacher can interact with
learners without being too overpowering.
Other
than that, a teacher must fill the role of a learner, anyone who has been
involved in a profession long enough knows that there is always something new
to learn. A learner is a person who is always growing in life and will never
claim that they know it all. A teacher will be challenged every day with a new
task that will help them develop into a better person.
One last role a teacher must fill is being a planner. Teachers must be expert
planners, both on paper and in their heads. This is because it is uncertain to
what may happen that will derail the current lesson plan, so a teacher must
have backup plans available to pull at a moment’s notice. Most of the time, the
planning involves taking the assessment data from the previous lessons and
using it to develop plans for the next unit. The success of many activities
depends on good organization and on the students knowing exactly what they are to do next.
A teacher’s role is
ever-changing and not limited to one. Teachers are people with educational
leadership skills and they must continue to grow and develop as professionals.
Anyone seeking to be a teacher should take advantage of any chance they get
to grow as a person and as a teacher.
